Description

A comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned hamburger patties layered with creamy potatoes and topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 can (10 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can (10 ounces) cream of chicken soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with a light coating of oil or nonstick spray.
  2. Season and Shape the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Form the mixture into 6 oval-shaped patties. Set aside.
  3. Slice the Veggies: Peel and thinly slice your potatoes. The thinner, the better—they’ll cook faster and absorb more flavor. Slice the onion into rings or half-moons, depending on your preference.
  4. Layer the Dish: Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes along the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Scatter half of the onions over the potatoes. Place the hamburger patties over this layer. Top the patties with the remaining onions, then finish with another layer of potatoes.
  5. Make the Sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, and milk until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the entire dish, making sure to coat the potatoes and meat thoroughly.
  6. Bake and Add Cheese: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven uncovered for another 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are fork-tender.
  7. Rest and Serve: Let the Amish Hamburger Steak Bake rest for 10 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to settle and makes for easier slicing.
