Description

A delicious chocolate cake layered with creamy ricotta and topped with a chocolate mousse-like layer, perfect for special occasions!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, and water)
  • 2 lbs ricotta cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 (5 oz) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 (8 oz) container whipped topping (like Cool Whip)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish generously. Prepare the chocolate cake mix as directed on the box. Pour the cake batter evenly into the prepared pan. Set aside.
  2. Mix the Ricotta Layer: In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and creamy. This will look similar to a cheesecake filling. Carefully spoon this mixture over the chocolate cake batter, covering the entire surface without mixing the two layers together.
  3. Bake and Let the Magic Happen: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour. During this time, the ricotta mixture will sink to the bottom and the chocolate cake will rise to the top—creating that signature layered look.
  4. Cool Completely: Let the cake cool completely in the pan. It must be fully cooled before adding the topping, or the whipped layer will melt.
  5. Make the Topping: In a medium bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix and milk until thick. Fold in the whipped topping gently until fully combined. Spread this chocolate mousse-like topping evenly over the cooled cake.
  6. Chill Before Serving: Refrigerate the cake for at least 6 hours, but overnight is best. This allows the flavors to meld and the topping to firm up.

Notes

  • For best results, chill overnight before serving.
