Description

A delicious Turkish dessert made of fried dough balls soaked in honey syrup, often garnished with crushed pistachios.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package (7g) instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or sunflower oil)
  • Crushed pistachios for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
    • Gradually add the warm water, mixing until you have a smooth, sticky dough.
    • Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
  2. Make the Syrup:
    • In a saucepan, combine the honey, water, and lemon juice.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Fry the Lokmas:
    • Heat oil in a deep pan or pot over medium heat.
    • Using two teaspoons, scoop small portions of dough and carefully drop them into the hot oil.
    • Fry the dough balls until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
    • Remove the lokmas with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Soak and Serve:
    • Once the lokmas are cool enough to handle, dip them in the honey syrup until they are well coated.
    • Place them on a serving platter and sprinkle with crushed pistachios if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying; otherwise, the lokmas may absorb too much oil.
  • You can flavor the syrup with a touch of rose or orange blossom water for an additional aromatic note.
  • For extra crunch, fry the lokmas in small batches and do not overcrowd the pan.
