Description
A delicious Turkish dessert made of fried dough balls soaked in honey syrup, often garnished with crushed pistachios.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 package (7g) instant yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Oil for frying (vegetable or sunflower oil)
- Crushed pistachios for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
- Gradually add the warm water, mixing until you have a smooth, sticky dough.
- Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Make the Syrup:
- In a saucepan, combine the honey, water, and lemon juice.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Fry the Lokmas:
- Heat oil in a deep pan or pot over medium heat.
- Using two teaspoons, scoop small portions of dough and carefully drop them into the hot oil.
- Fry the dough balls until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
- Remove the lokmas with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Soak and Serve:
- Once the lokmas are cool enough to handle, dip them in the honey syrup until they are well coated.
- Place them on a serving platter and sprinkle with crushed pistachios if desired.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying; otherwise, the lokmas may absorb too much oil.
- You can flavor the syrup with a touch of rose or orange blossom water for an additional aromatic note.
- For extra crunch, fry the lokmas in small batches and do not overcrowd the pan.
